The inclusion of organic food in our daily diet has not succeeded in becoming a commonplace occurrence as yet. Ignorance about organic food abounds causing most people to react in wonder at the expensive organic food products which are being touted as desirable of late. The benefits notwithstanding, the common refrain still happens to be why is organic food so expensive? Let us now take a look at the reasons for it.

  • The primary reason for growing organic food is to keep the food natural and untainted by chemicals. This requires untreated land for farming which makes it a costly venture resulting in expensive organic food.

  • A land whose fertility is not enhanced by additives tends to get exhausted after a few years leading to low yields. The low quantity of organic food obtained is another reason for enhancing the price factor making expensive organic food the norm in spite of its benefits.

  • Using natural means for combating pests during the production process of organic food is also an expensive option which is reflected in the price of the food products.

  • There are a number of additional stages during the production and harvesting processes of an organic food crop. The additional procedures tend to add on to the costs making the naturally derived food products more expensive than the conventional food items in the market. The increased prices that we have to pay in order to enjoy the benefits of organic foods are influenced by certain indirect factors as well.
  • There are quite a few governmental subsidies on agro products obtained by the conventional methods which bring the price down. The organic farming methods have no such subsidies hence their prices shoot up making the food products inordinately expensive.

  • With more and more people awakening to the benefits of organic food products, their demand in the market has gone up considerably making the price rise imperative.

  • Since the naturally produced food products also have a responsibility to the environment, there are additional procedures involved in cleaning up the land after the harvest in order to replenish the environment. All this comes at an added cost which gets reflected in the price of the organic product making it more expensive than the regular food products.
