Whey powder

It is every man’s dream to flex muscles like those of well-known action heroes. Whey protein is a common dietary supplement used by bodybuilders. For those of you, who are new to the whey world, here are the whey protein reviews for you.

Whey Protein composition

Whey is a bi-product of cheese that is manufactured using cow’s milk. A collection of globular proteins, whey protein is isolated form cheese after being processed using specialty filters. The fat is removed using spray drying and processed for human consumption. There are three major forms of whey protein found in the market:

  • Concentrate – These comprise of 29% to 89% proteins by weight. These have low levels of fat and cholesterol.
  • Isolate – These are more than 90% protein by weight with no fat and lactose content.
  • Hydrolysates – These are pre-digested proteins that can be quickly absorbed but are way costly than the other two forms.

Health effects of Whey protein

  • Branched chain amino acids are present in whey protein in abundance. These are used for fuelling the muscles and for stimulating protein-synthesis.
  • Majority of bodybuilders consumes it across the globe because it can be easily digested. It increases the muscle mass in the body and is used to increase the amino acid levels too. Therefore, after a rigorous workout, it is advisable to consume the correct quantities of whey protein.Body Building-Whey protein
  • On following a strict workout regime, the body muscles are prone to wear and tear. Whey protein regularizes the flow of nutrients in the blood vessels, thereby rebuilding the muscle tissues. This is done by inhibiting an enzyme called Angiotensin-converting enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for constricting blood vessels. Whey protein stops its constrictive action and allows better blood flow.
  • It is suggested that whey protein consumption could help in reducing the risk of cancer. Gluthathione is an antioxidant that defends the body against free radical damage. Studies are still going on to find the methods to incorporate whey protein in required levels in food products and medicines to prevent cancer.
  • Generally, reviews on Whey protein are given in context to bodybuilding, but it is equally beneficial for dieters i.e. people who aim to lose weight. Protein intake helps in balancing the blood-sugar levels. This reduces the urge to eat often thereby reducing the fat content in the body.
  • Whey protein can help T-cell activity in the body and lessen the number of wasting tissues or dead cells in the body of an ailing person. The T-cell activity prevents the immune system of the body to destroy its own cells in a state of self-reactivity. When the immune system fails to discriminate between self and non-self entities, it can go into an excessive self-destruction spree. To prevent this, T-cell activity comes in place.

Whey protein side effects

  • Excessive whey protein consumption can lead to occurrence of numerous side effects in people. Renal failure may occur in such scenarios where people tend to consume large amounts of Whey protein in an attempt to gain muscle-mass quickly.
  • A very common ailment that occurs during the menopausal period in women, Osteoporosis, can also be the result of excessive consumption of Whey protein. This happens because the excess amount of Whey protein causes an imbalance in the mineral content in bones. This reduces the bone density thereby causing osteoporosis.
  • Liver damage can also be caused due to excessive consumption of Whey protein.
  • Some people have low tolerance towards lactose. They may develop certain allergic reactions on consuming Whey protein. It is hence important to check for any reactive behavior of the body towards Whey before incorporating it in the daily diet.

Every coin has two sides and it is important to be acquainted with both of those to make the correct decision about its usefulness. Correct information may churn out millions of healthy and fit physiques but the lack of it may lead to a population of frail and fragile bodies.
