Food for Energy
A constant supply of energy is very important for the brain functioning. Complex carbohydrates provide the required energy steadily over a longer period of time. Proteins are required for constant growth and development of the body. Protein, iron and iodine are needed for brain development. Vitamin B is required for the proper functioning of the nervous system and for the manufacture and release of neurotransmitters.
Avoid Heavy Food
You should not give your child dry fruits such as almonds, and foods cooked in pure ghee (clarified butter) or saturated fats. These foods make your child groggy. Good quantities of carbohydrates are essential for your child; just make sure it’s well distributed during the day. Including unpolished rice, whole wheat chapaties, ragi rotis, whole wheat breads, potatoes, pulses, etc will provide your child with adequate carbohydrates.
Ensure Adequate Proteins
Always include one or two protein-rich portions in your child’s meal. You can include lean meat, fish, eggs, milk, curd, yogurt, paneer, cheese, nuts, pulses like rajma, soy etc in his meals. These fruits and vegetables provide a variety of vitamins and minerals along with fiber.
Your child should also drink a lot of liquids for proper brain functioning. You can give him water, coconut water, buttermilk, lime juice or any other refreshing healthy drink.
Avoid Desserts
You should remove fried foods, sweets, desserts and soft drinks from your child’s meal as much as possible. Also, avoid caffeinated foods and beverages.
Allow plenty of breaks; let your child get out in the fresh air. Don’t let him eat while studying. Treat the meal as a break and allow your child to enjoy it. Make him eat well and he will naturally perform well in the exams.
