But, have you ever thought why do we drink liquids like water or diet coke with our meals? Well, a few obvious reasons would be that either we are thirsty or may be the food tastes good with certain drinks or sometimes it’s just hard to swallow dry chicken without any drink.
However, there have been a lot of arguments about the bad affects of drinking water or any liquid with meals. Drinking too much water with meals may raise various problems like improper digestion, expanding stomach size and increasing body weight.
Drinking Too Much Water With Meals Is Harmful
Here's why drinking too much water between meals is considered bad for health:
1. Research proposes that there is nothing wrong in drinking a small amount of water while you have your meals. However, drinking large amount of juice, water, or even soda can cause serious digestion problems. Any sort of liquids taken while you eat your meals can weaken the digestive enzymes. This further destroys stomach acids and saliva in the mouth. The stomach acids and saliva are extremely essential for breaking down the food and it also helps in absorbing the nutrients. As, it’s hard to break down the food without the stomach enzymes, the stomach end up producing more acids that further results in acid reflux or heartburn. This could possiblely put more pressure on the small intestines.
2. Drinking plenty of water and fluids with meals can even affect the blood insulin level of your body. The sugar level of our blood goes up while we consume carbohydrates with water. Since our body requires only a limited quantity of sugar in order to convert the same in energy, all the excess sugar is usually stored by insulin in the body. This excess insulin could be very dangerous for diabetic patients.
The Conclusion
Drinking water with meals is totally safe until you are taking a little amount of water. Excess of anything is bad for health and same is the case here. As long as you are controlling the quantity of water, drinking water with food is absolutely safe.
