Pairing red wines with a chocolate dessert should not be a difficult task as red wine possesses undertones of chocolate. But the work is not as easy as it seems. Paring a chocolate dessert with a wrong red wine may prove disastrous. We have tried to answer what red wines can be paired with a chocolate dessert.

1. Red wines consist of more tannins (organic compounds present in the skin and seeds of grape) as compared to white wines. High tannins conflicts with the chocolaty flavor leading to a sour aftertaste, if consumed together.
2. While pairing red wine with a chocolate dessert, make sure that the wine is sweeter than the chocolate. A sweet wine like California Zinfandel and Australian Shiraz pairs perfectly with desserts made of dark chocolates.
3. Red wines with fruity undertones make an excellent serve with fruity desserts or those which have coconuts etc. as ingredients.
4. Red wine labeled Bordeaux do not go with chocolate desserts at all.
5. Cabernet and Merlot are red wines that are best served with dark chocolate desserts only after they are fully aged. Moreover, Merlot goes well with milk chocolates too.
