For the beef to be classified as organic beef, the beef should have been reared on the following principles:
-The beef should have been born and raised on pasture that has been certified as organic.
-The beef should not have received any form of antibiotics or growth inducing hormones.
-The beef should have been fed on a diet of organic fodder and grains.
-No plastic roughage or manure should have been added to beef feed.
-The beef should have had unrestricted outdoor access, should have had access to fresh drinking water and proper veterinary care.
Under organic beef program, there are two types of beef feeding methods popular: grain feeding and grass feeding. Grass-fed cattle are fed organic grass until the time they are slaughtered. Grass fed cattle are leaner and less flavorful than the grain-fed cattle which have a higher percentage of fat and are tastier.
All the above factors contribute in making beef organic and to buy organic beef one should be aware of which beef to pick as there are many US certified beef with terms like “natural”, “hormone free” or “grass fed”. Only beef which has the US certified seal of organic beef should be picked up at the supermarket.
