What Foods To Eat While Wearing Dentures?
Getting used to eating with dentures is of course an affair that needs a lot of practice and patience. But, more than that, it also needs you to know what foods to eat while wearing dentures. Not everything can be eaten while wearing your dentures – not at least during the initial days. Therefore, know the right kind of food that is suitable to you if you are wearing dentures and get used to these artificial teeth easily.
Not eating the right kind of food while wearing dentures may run the risk of breaking them at an angle where the dentures meet the surface. Therefore, avoid eating hard, crunchy foods, like raw vegetables, hard pretzels or nuts. A few food examples for people wearing dentures are listed below:
• At an Initial Stage:
If you have just started using those dentures of yours, you need to be extra careful. Instead of solid food, stick to liquid diets and soft foods. Go for smoothies, scrambled eggs, cooked or boiled fish, soft meats, well boiled vegetables, mashed potatoes, cooked cereals, noodles, beans, apple sauce and puddings. You can also try the soups, stews, yogurt, purees and juices.
• A Few Weeks Old:
The initial few days might be a little difficult, but your chewing abilities will surely improve after a few weeks – by when you can try experimenting with other options. Once a little comfortable with eating with dentures, you can try out food with harder textures. Therefore, gradually move on to foods like sliced fruits and vegetables. You can also try out those light crackers, soft crusted breads, tender corns, cheese and poultry items. However, when trying these harder foods, always ensure to chew your food thoroughly before gulping them in.
• Foods to Avoid:
To know what foods to eat while wearing dentures, it is also important to know which foods are never to be taken. If wearing dentures, always avoid sticky foods, for example, chewing gum, chewy chocolates, taffy, mochi balls and so on. Even when completely used to the dentures and totally confident about using them, foods that require tugging should be avoided. For example, peanut butter, breads with hard crusts, whole fruits and vegetables, fruits with seeds in them and tough meats should be avoided. Try avoiding food with bones. Also avoid nuts and seeds, for they can easily slip underneath your dentures.
Thus, being a little cautious and being selective about the kind of food you eat wearing dentures helps you a lot in adapting the technique. At the same time, always bear in mind that whatever you eat, take smaller bites of them and take time to chew them really well. Also, use both sides of your mouth to chew your food. Thus, know what to eat and how to eat them and you would get adjusted to your new pair of teeth in just a few weeks!
