What Do You Know About Organic Fish
Organic foods are not only limited to fruits, vegetables and poultry. Organic fish farming has also become very popular in the last few years.
Organic fish are those which have matured without the use of antibiotics, pesticides and dyes , otherwise so common in conventional fish farming. The fish farms where these fish grow have to meet some specific standards and they comply by all the rules and regulations to get their license. These farms are monitored in terms of wellbeing of fish, nutrition provided to the fish, breeding of fish and the place of fish farming.
However, there are some controversies associated with organic fish. In year 2008, the 'National Organic Standards Board' proposed the organic standards for the farmed fish. The fish which are caught from wild and pristine waters cannot be termed as 'organic'.
Many consumers and fishermen opposed this criterion. Also, what is very interesting is that 25% of the feed of organic fish is derived from wild fish sources. The organic livestock must be raised on organic diet, which does not hold well in case of organic fish.
Many people also have their concerns about the living conditions of an organic fish when compared to a normal fish that has more access to free waters.
Fish farming is also cause of diseases in the fish. Salmons are reared on organic farms in the UK. Since the demand for organic fish in UK is rising, fish are reared densely in the farm. The overcrowding of the farm means more and more fish can become ill and even the wild fish gets prone to the illness.
It is also not easy to sustain the fish in the farms as many fishes escape from the farm.
