The moment I hear the word surgery, and that too Gastric Sleeve Surgery, there is an instant stinging pain in my stomach just thinking about the Gastric Sleeve Surgery complications. Just the thought of a method of weight loss where a part of my stomach will be cut and pulled out of me is enough to motivate me to wear my jogging shoes before things go out of control.

There have been success stories after the Gastric Sleeve Surgeries and the Gastric lapband surgeries but we must always remember that anything done with the human body which is unnatural is unhealthy. All of it may seem all rosy from afar, but Gastric sleeve surgery complications are coming to the fore now. The post operative complications have about a 3% chance of occurring. So, what is this surgery? check out the video.

A few dangerous complications that may be a result of the Gastric Sleeve Surgery are

  1. Infections- Once the organs are exposed and the surgical wounds are fresh, post-op care is very necessary. Lack of proper care and treatment may lead to infections of the wound.
  2. Bleeding- Though many surgeons performing the Gastric Sleeve surgeries take a double precaution of suturing the stomach lining, in case of morbidly obese people, the risk of bleeding and tearing of wound is very possible.
  3. Leaking of the sleeve – Since the sleeve is stapled, there is a chance that it may tear and the sleeve may leak causing acids to leak out and infect surrounding tissues.
  4. Mortality-Though only 0.3%, but there is a risk of mortality also.
  5. Weight regain- this is a chance too. The lifestyle of the patient has to undergo a change altogether. This Gastric Sleeve Surgery Complication may arise due to snacks and high calorie food which makes the band ineffective.
  6. Restricted Diet-The patient has to learn only to have 5 meals a day after a Gastric Sleeve Surgery and with no snacks absolutely. Also, high calorie drinks such as coca cola, ice-tea or any other soft drinks must be avoided.
  7. Stomach mucus irritation and swelling due to vomiting or anti-inflammatory drug use.

Though it is understood that certain people have a genetic problem and need such surgical procedures to reduce weight, the basic idea behind the Gastric Sleeve Surgery is that a part of your stomach is cut off, so that your stomach becomes smaller, hence, the appetite drops, and so do your helpings. But if you are my kind and just pure lazy, why not try some self control and see what goes into our mouths, so that we don't reach this stage? Gulp!frown
