Are there any adverse effects of soy products? There have been numerous studies that fuel the discussions about soy product effects. There are government lobbies for and against this supposed meat substitute. Soy as a grain has been consumed in vast parts of Asia and is by far the cheapest and richest source of protein from grain. Nowadays the forms in which it is consumed among others are soy milk, soy cheese or tofu, tempeh etc. While it is difficult to choose sides for or against eating soy as the arguments on both sides are equally strong, the key is moderation. You cannot go wrong with moderation. The few common adverse effects of excessive soy are listed below.

Soy grains contain a substance called isoflavons which are the plant equivalent of estrogen, the main female hormone. An excess of isoflavons can cause them to bind to the estrogen receptors in the bones and cardiovascular system and act like estrogen. An increase in the hormonal activity can lead to rapid multiplication of cells in the mammary glands and spur the formation of cancerous breast tumors, in other words breast cancer

Infants and young children can have an allergic response to soy. It is an abnormal immunologic response to the soy protein. Allergic response could manifest as rashes, stomach cramps, swelling of the wind pipe or wheezing and a fall in blood pressure. Do not assume these to be an allergic response, consult with a pediatrician to confirm the same.

Thyroid synthesis can be hampered due to over consumption of soy. Moreover, people with lesser active thyroid gland should totally avoid soy. Deficient thyroid gland secretions can lead to goiter, insomnia and digestive disorders.

Gout is associated with excessive meat eating. Basically it is an over dose of protein for the body. This disease causes severe inflammation and pain in the joints. While heavy meat eaters are the usual victims, people who were made to switch to soy due to other dietary restrictions often develop gout as they over compensate for the meat with soy.
