Bringing Students Toward Vegetarianism

Involving students in gardening projects is an ideal way to make them realise the importance of vegetarianism.  Even thoug gardening is not preferred as a hobby by many teenagers while in schools, the presence of the right kind of atmosphere and encouragement can motivate them to take the step toward vegetarianism. Whatever said and done, vegetarianism is good, or rather it is the best!

In one such initiative, the ‘grow your own’ scheme was introduced in a few UK primary schools. The response the schools received was tremendous. Teenagers who are hard to be motivated on any such issues have in fact embraced the scheme completely. The school gardens were transformed into small patches of plants growing vegetables. This initiative is part of the Food for Life scheme promoted by the Soil Association.

The children under the initiative could grow their own food. They began feeling that they are one with nature and had no one to intervene. The right steps required to say yes to vegetarianism.

The Otley College of Further Education in the UK said that courses in conservation, arboriculture, landscape and garden design have received a very good response from student.  Also, the Thurston Community College is taking a step forward by introducing such courses to small children. A small step in promoting vegetarianism among children.

These schools are filed with gardens. The students grow vegetables and fruits, which are sent across to the canteen to be cooked for them. So, they grow and eat their own vegetables. This is promoting the fact that vegetarianism is good. The more a child knows about plants, the more tolerant the child is towards eating fresh foods.

Each garden in the school has a different theme. One is wildlife garden and the other had hens and chicks. These initiatives taught the children about the health benefits of vegetables and vegetarianism.

The school now plans to expand the initiative further. Such tasks of encouraging children eating fresh home-grown food is a challenge. Encouraging children towards vegetarianism is tough. But fun-filled activities can drive the message straight that vegetarianism is good.
