Top Ten Bizarre Celebrity Food Commercials

06-Aug-2010 by foodbuff

Most of the celebrities like Florence Henderson with Wesson oil are totally appropriate for endorsing food products. But, we do have a major junk of personalities that just don’t match up with the endorsed food products. So, I am counting upon the top ten bizarre celebrity food commercials of all times.

Top Ten Bizarre Celebrity Food Commercials

1. Madonna, Shochu Ads

Released in 1995, the television spot of Madonna starrer Japanese shochu (rice brandy) was a cheerful version of her popular pop video character. In the commercial, the pop star cleverly kills a terrifying dragon using the Samurai sword and says "I'm pure." The makers still have to figure out the logic behind this commercial.

2. Demi Moore, JogMate Protein Drink

The sweet Demi Moore selling vitamin drinks named as JogMate Protein in Japan. The idea is pretty relevant keeping in mind the fresh “G.I Jane” image of Moore. But the concept is weird. A scrap came close in the toothpaste tube and commercial copy translates it as “the jelly drink which is convenient for carrying.” Nonetheless, I don’t think any of the men even thought of looking at the toothpaste tube.

3. Cybill Shepherd, Beef

The commercial of Cybill Shepherd endorsing beef was released at the peak of her career in 1987. She became the spokeswomen for American beef with a complete uncanny campaign saying “real food for real people.” In the commercial, Shepherd sexily says "something hot and juicy and so utterly simple you can eat it with your hands. I mean, I know some people who don't eat burgers. But I'm not sure I trust them." Couple of weeks before, she had quoted in a magazine, "I've cut down on fatty foods and am trying to stay away from red meat." And the controversy continues.

  4. Brad Pitt, Pringles

Firstly, it is kind of weird in itself to see hot men selling Pringles. And here we see, Brad Pitt, shirtless with a “saved by the bell” haircut singing "I've got the fever! The fever reliever!" Do I need to say anything more to prove the bizarre quotient of this commercial?

 5. The Flintstones, Winston Cigarettes

We have seen the bedrock family selling various chewable vitamins for at least 40 years now. So basically there is nothing bizarre about this commercial.  But, Fred and Wilma actually got a health bug after acting in this commercial. They  used to be one of the famous cartoon characters selling Winston cigarettes. But, then they went ahead and joined Bayer Healthcare instead.

6. Mikhail Gorbachev, Pizza Hut

Mikhail Gorbachev was the former soviet president, ended communism in the USSR, brought down the Berlin Wall, and dismantled his country. Despite this busy life, Mikhail Gorbachev actually got some time in 1997. So, he went ahead to star in a Pizza Hut commercial. What a waste!!

 7. Michael J. Fox, Soda

Michael J. Fox should have had a desire to star in mysterious advertisements. So, he went on to feature for a Japanese tea-based soda. The director of the commercial wanted a nervous, crooked smile on Michael’s face. This was to depict the "Back to the Future star to do” in the commercial. Well, it’s really hard to imagine nervous Michael selling soda.

8. Steven Seagal, Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt

The next on my list is Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt commercial. They proudly say "First energy drinks to contain Tibetan Goji Berries." The website also stated, "First energy drinks to contain Asian Cordyceps!" Well, what I can say is this is probably the first energy drink commercial that can eat up your hair line, give you a greasy pony tail and get you some waist tire.  Don’t believe me.. peep into this commercial.

9.  Orson Welles, Findus Frozen Peas

The legendary film maker of “Citizen Kane” fame, Orson Welles recorded some very popular voice-overs for a series of commercials of Findus, a frozen-food company. These commercials were popularly known as “Frozen Peas.” It is highly irritating to see the Welles just reading the commercial for food products without any enthusiasm in his voice.

 10. Bruce Willis, Seagram's Golden Wine Coolers v. Jason Alexander, McDonald's McD.L.T.

The last spot in this top ten bizarre celebrity food commercials list is reserved for this singing and dancing salute to McDonald's McD.L.T commercial.  The credit should go to Bruce Willis for his soulful effort on behalf of Seagram's Golden Wine Coolers or Jason Alexander.

It mostly depends upon the image of the celebrity who is endorsing the food to take the commercial to high levels. These were the top ten bizarre celebrity food commercials that I think wasted the efforts of the producers. Did I miss any of your favorites? Do remind me by commenting.
