The trick is to eat food that will provide your body with amino acid, tryptophan, vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid as these are what the neurotransmitter serotonin is made from and to lift your mood you need plenty of serotonin.
 
Food for better mood - Oatmeal
 
Whole grains, oatmeal or brown rice are all good mood lifters as they increase the carbs in your body and there is a strong bond between between carbohydrates and mood. Carbs help to produce tryptophan, a nonessential amino acid which when it enters the brain consequently increases the production of serotonin and your mood will soon tend to improve. Oatmeal with its high finer content also helps in smoothing out blood sugar levels by slowing down sugar absorption into the blood. You can make your oatmeal tastier by adding toppings like low-fat granola and skim milk, coarsely chopped apple or unsweetened chunky applesauce with cinnamon or/and strawberries and sliced almonds

Salmon is a rich source of Omega-3 acids which is a natural antidepressant. This is because omega-3s affect neurotransmitter pathways in the brain. As you know the best sources of Omega – 3 are fatty fish like wild salmon, herring, and sardines. Walnuts and pumpkin seeds can also help in this case. Even a  fish-oil supplement but my choice is the Salmon as not only is it tasty it is also a natural source of Vitamin D  which is again another mood booster as it also helps in increasing the levels of serotonin.

Bananas also contain tryptophan that helps in the production of serotonin.  Banana regulates your blood glucose levels which will obviously have a positive effect on your mood. There is good news for you girls who suffer from PMS and the husbands who suffer along. Banana can kill PMS associated depression. This is because banana is also a rich source of Vitamin B6.
