even have enough to eat on a daily basis, it would be a crime to waste food. There are many ways that you can avoid food wastage. Here are some tips to eliminate food wastage.
1. Put away leftovers right after the meal. If they are to be used after a few days, pop them in the freezer, if not, refrigerate them.
2. Never go shopping on a hungry stomach to the super market. You will end up buying a lot of junk that you may never end up eating and then it all gets tossed.
3. Think about the number of people eating at home, if there are toddlers then factor their appetite into the meal making process. This way you know exactly how much to make and don’t end up wasting food.
4. Don’t fret over running out of food. Keep your fridge and pantry well stocked with healthy snacks that can stretch into meal if needed. Don’t constantly make twice as much as people in your household will consume.
5. Be attentive towards expiration dates, especially with perishables. Freeze the food if you think it will spoil before consumption.
6. If the product says it will go bad on a particular date that does not mean you need to toss it the very next day. If it is canned or boxed then it is probably edible for the next few days but of course it may not taste as good.
7. Learn ways for making new meals from leftover foods. Experiment with recipes or look up ways online and there will probably be a new dish you could utilize that leftover chicken in.
8. Keep your fridge, freezer and pantry neat and well arranged so that you can immediately spot what needs to be used right away. Label things that are stored in zip locks so you know what it is and put an expiration date on it as well.
9. Don’t let your kids’ waste food. Be strict with them about finishing what they put on their plate so you eliminate wastage and get them to listen to you as well.
10. Make a mental note of foods that end up getting wasted or dishes that are not so liked by other members in the family. Make them in less quantity next time or change up the recipe to improve flavor. Discover what works and what doesn’t to save you time, effort and money.
Now that you have all these great tips and techniques at hand, eliminating food wastage at home should be a walk in the park.
