Greek foods are a part of the Mediterranean cuisine which share many similarities with Italian, Turkish and Levantine cuisine.   Olive oil and herbs are commonly used in all Greek recipes. Greek Salad: Greek salad is also known as Horiatiki. You need tomatoes, feta cheese, onion, cucumber, olive oil, olives, oregano, and salt to prepare this summer salad. You can also add pickled leaves, capers, parsley, and buds in the salad. Dice all the vegetables and add oregano, salt, feta cheese, and olive oil to it. Now the salad is ready, you can serve it during main meal or snack.

 

Moussaka: Mousakka is a sauteed aubergine based dish, which is prepared in most of the Balkan, Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East regions.  You need aubergines, vegetable oil, minced beef, onion, white wine, fresh tomatoes, cinnamon, black pepper, parmesan, oregano, and parsley.  For preparing béchamel sauce you need butter, warm milk, flour, Parmesan, white pepper and egg yolks.  Moussaka is baked in oven. It is better to cook it in two days, because that gives lots of time for other preliminary preparations. Meat can be cooked a day before, and but don’t handle aubergines like that. Aubergines taste good only when freshly cooked.

 

Greek Baklava: This is a sweet pastry prepared from phyllo dough, nuts and caster sugar. Slightly different variations of this sweet are famous throughout central and southwest Asia too.  You need dry fruits like walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon for the filling. Other than that you will need phyllo pastry, and unsalted butter for the base. And caster sugar, water, cinnamon sticks, lemon peel and honey for preparing sugar syrup. It is believed that this sweet has central Asian Turkic origin.

 

Yoghurt dip (Tzatziki): This is an appetizer dish which is also used as a sauce for souvlaki and gyros. It is made by straining yoghurt with cucumbers, salt, garlic, olive oil, pepper, dill, parsley, and lemon juice.  It tastes good when served cold.  Always use thick yoghurt and less watery cucumbers to prepare Tzatziki.

 

Greek salad (2) (Horiatiki Salata): This is a traditional Greek salad which is prepared using ripe tomatoes.  You will need ripe tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, Greek Feta Cheese, dried oregano, green bell pepper, sea salt, virgin oil, Greek olives and pickled pepperoncini hot peppers (for garnishing ).  You can also use salted anchovies and capers for tossing.  Long cucumbers are best for salad.

 

Baklava Rolls - (Baklavadakia): Baklavadakia  is one of the most popular Greek desserts known throughout the world.   All the ingredients used in the baklava roll are same as the traditional baklava. Only, here the phyllo pastry is rolled and cut into individual pieces.

 

Ancient Fruit Salad - (Froutosalata):  This is a simple summer salad, which is prepared by combining various seasonal fruits. Greeks are very fond of fruits and fruit salads, so they always end their meal with delicious salads. You need apples, smith apple, pears, nectarines, bananas, kiwi fruits, oranges and honey to prepare this salad. This salad can also be taken as a light meal or afternoon snack.

 

Spinach pie with cheese (spanakopita): This is a traditional Greek dish prepared with cheese, spinach, herbs and phyllo dough. You need spinach, spring onions, olive oil and water to make the filling and spinach, egg, feta cheese, freshly ground pepper, olive oil, phyllo sheets and water to prepare the pita. This can be served as an appetizer, light meal, or side dish.

 

Meat and macaroni pie - (Pastitsio): This is a baked pasta dish which includes meat sauce, pasta and a béchamel sauce.  You need tubular pasta, ground meat, eggs, kefalo or parmesan cheese, oil, onion, tomatoes to prepare this pasta. It is often served with salad.

 

Souvlaki - (souvlaki): This is a popular Greek food prepared by grilling small pieces of meat and vegetable over a skewer.  You need beef, olive oil, lemons, oregano, pepper and thyme to prepare this dish. It is mostly served with skewer to eat out of hand, along with pita sandwich or with a dinner.
