Tips To Identify Rotten Lemon
Lemon finds its way into almost every part of our meal but when you accidentally end up consuming rotten lemon, it just spoils the taste, right? Despite their high acidic content, lemons can go bad too. Therefore, be careful to identify rotten lemon with the following tips, so that you always enjoy the sweet ‘n’ tangy taste and smell of lemon.
Classic Signs Of Rot In Lemon
Spots
Check the lemon surface for black or brown spots, which may be a result of mold or bacteria growth. These spots may be light or dark in shade and either clubbed together or scattered over the whole surface of lemon.
Peel
Feel the lemon peel all over. The older the lemon, the harder its peel would be to touch. A ripe but fresh lemon will have less dimples on its surface and would be smooth to touch.
Smell
Smell your lemons. If the scent is slightly sour, it is still fresh. But if the smell is rancid or fermented, the lemon has gone bad.
Shape
A lemon simply collapses when it goes bad. Therefore, if the moisture has left the fruit, it would lose its shape and you can poke it deep, leaving a dent in its surface.
Color
Lemon turns brown when it has lost its tanginess and is rotten. So never use a brown lemon.
Juice
Lemon juice turns disgustingly bitter once the fruit rots. If your lemon doesn’t show any of the above signs but the juice tastes bitter, it is still rotten and, so, should be discarded.
The above tips to identify rotten lemon should come in handy for you while in your daily cooking.
