Basil: if the dish you are preparing is tomato based, you can effectively substitute thyme with basil.

 

Oregano: Another great substitute for thyme in a tomato based gravy or sauce can be thyme. However, the flavor won’t be the same as thyme.

 

Tarragon: If you need a thyme substitute for a chicken or a fish dish, tarragon is just ideal to replace thyme.

 

Rosemary: In a pork or lamb preparation, you can easily substitute thyme with rosemary, the flavor would be different, but you won’t feel that something is missing.

 

Dill: This goes best with potato dishes. You can easily substitute Dill fresh or dried for thyme.
