World`s Most Expensive FoodsSome of the most expensive foods in the world make you wonder what makes them so expensive. From the rarity of the ingredients to the sophisticated treatment of them and stellar presentation, there are many criteria that these foods have to comply with before being adjudged worlds’ most expensive foods. Let’s take a look at some of these foods that would burn a hole in your wallet. Here you go:

  • Italian White Alba Truffle - $1,60,406

Truffles are nothing but fungi and those fungi that are difficult to cultivate become the most expensive food in the world. And the most expensive truffle weighs just about 1.51 kilograms (3.3 lbs).

  • Frrrozen Haute Chocolate - $25,000

The New York restaurant Serendipity 3's Frrrozen Haute Chocolate comes with a mix of 28 cocoas from across the globe, packed with 23-karat gold and lined with more edible gold. Topped with whipped cream and gold and served with truffles that are priced at $2,600, this dessert is truly worth all the fuss. It also comes with 18k gold bracelet laced with diamonds and has to be eaten with a golden spoon.

  • Alma Caviar - $25,000

It is rare caviar from Iran, served in a 24 karat gold tin worth $16,000. Should I say more? Almas caviar is a much priced dish available at a London restaurant – Caviar House.

  • Dansuke Watermelon -$6,100

Watermelons are rare in Japan. And it is this rarity that has upped the price of this special variety of watermelons in the country. Dansuke watermelons are crisp and have a different level of sweetness. What more? They are cultivated only on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Hence these watermelons are more often given as gifts than purchased for consumption.

  • Saffron - $5,000 per pound

It is the most expensive spice in the world, but for a reason. It is hard to grow and the harvesting of saffron is labor intensive. About 1,50,000 flowers are required to produce about two pounds of this priceless spice.

  • Bird’s Nest Soup - $4,535 per pound

Famously eastern, this food comes from the glue-like saliva of some birds. These are so priced in some Asian countries that bird’s nest soup is dubbed the ‘caviar of the east’. The food is this expensive because of the labor involved in harvesting the nest of the birds.

  • Samundari Khazana - $3200

It was during the DVD release of Slumdog Millionaire that Bombay Brassiere whipped up this exquisite curry platter with the most expensive foods from around the word. The platter boasted of Devon crab, white truffle, Beluga caviar, Scottish lobster, and many such priced food.

  • Wagyu steak - $ 2800

The steak made from Wagyu cattle that is fed only beer and massaged regularly to make its meat tender, it is little surprise that the price of the meat has hit the roof.

  • Matsutake mushrooms - $1000 per pound

The matsutake, or mattake, mushrooms in Japan are extremely rare. And this rarity has contributed to its price.

  • Kopi Luwak coffee - $600

It’s rather weird how this coffee became so priced that it is one of the most expensive foods in the world. The trick of the trade is in not roasting the beans to perfection but in picking the bean from the feces of the palm civet that eats the coffee beans from the tree, clean and roast them and offer them to the world, at a price.
