Summer's Generous Bounty
Summer's Bounty

We love all types of chiles and use them in almost every meal. This year I am growing an abundance of Eastern European sweet peppers and of course the fiery chiles of India and Thailand. Chiles add such a colourful look to any garden-even mixed in amongst your flowers or ornamentals.
I have cut back from my usual 100+ heirloom tomato varieties to under 50 varitiies this year. I am particularily fond of the Ox Heart tomatoes such as Anna Russian, Thessaloniki Ox Heart, as well as black tomatoes like Paul Robeson and Japanese Black Triefle. There is nothing to compare with the flavour of The Love Apples vine rippened. They need little to make them sing-a touch of sea salt and perhaps a light grind of pepper.
One of our favourite summer salads is a Greek Salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, some Feta and a few home cured olives, and perhaps a drizzle of EVOO.
Strawberries are everyones favourite and so plentiful this time of year. I grow them in strawberry pots.
I grow many herbs, edible flowers, and fruits like grapes, figs, nectarines and an abundance of citrus. A couple of nights ago we grilled figs to serve with lamb chops wonderful with a touch of balsamic syrup spray.
I plant nasturiums on the ends of each of my raised beds for colour and snacking! They are lovely in salads and as a garnish. The leaves and flowers are edible! The deeper the colour the stronger the peppery taste will be.
I hope you all are enjoying the gorgeous fruits and veggies of summer! They all are so healthy and wonderful!
