Street Vendors…the Celeb Chefs of Tomorrow?

One of the many wonderful things about New York is that is it so alive with people from so many different cultures and creeds, full of character and individuality and nowhere is that more apparent than in the street-food vendors. No longer just hotdogs and pretzels, New York's street fare has become a cornucopia of delights from vegan Indian food to Middle Eastern falafel and everything in between.

In celebration of the diversity and excellence the Vendy Awards took place last month for the 3rd annual competition that was battled out in an "Iron Chef" style cook-off between the top five vendors.

The 2007 winner of this impressive award is Thiru Kumar, known to his loyal customers as "The Dosa Man" at NY Dosa, a Sri Lankan vegan food cart in Manhattan at Washington Square South and Sullivan Street.

According to one of those loyal customers; "Thiru makes super fresh Indian food-- mixed in with his own influences from Sri Lanka. All under the constraints and philosophy of veganism. He's always exceptionally nice and professional. Everyone knows that if money is scarce, you can get a meal from him and pay later. He's a great guy, humanitarian and environmentalist all while being one of the most legit chefs in the city. And his food is cheap. I essentially survive because of Thiru."

The other four finalists were:

Muhammed Rahman from Kwik Meal who was honored with a People's Choice Award
46th Street and Sixth Avenue
Bengali-spiced Middle Eastern fare: falafel, chicken, marinated lamb, shrimp.

Veronica Julien from Veronica's Kitchen
Front Street and Pine Street
Trinidadian/Jamaican cuisine
Jerk chicken, oxtail stew and more.

The 10-member team at Super Taco
96th Street and Broadway
Tacos, tortas, tamales, quesadillas

Farez "Freddy" Zeideia of The King of Falafel and Shawarma
30th Street and Broadway
Middle-eastern style street food
Falafel, shawarma, chicken
