Spices: King of Flavours 1. Turmeric
Spices and herbs are two broad categories from different plant parts used in different forms for seasoning in cooking or culinary industries having medicinal, aromatic, preservative, ritualistic, and cosmetic significance.
Turmeric: Curcuma longa
Hindi name- Haldi
The turmeric plant produces rhizomes, which are underground stems growing parallel to the ground that produce roots below and new shoots from their upper surface, are the source of this spice.
Dried and Powdered turmeric rhizome of this herbaceous plant is perhaps best known as a popular spice, frequently used in Eastern cooking. It is an ingredient of curry powders, and is also used to give mustard its characteristic color. It is sometimes used as a substitute for saffron (also known as Indian saffron).
The powdered turmeric has been used for making a deep yellow dye for fabrics for hundreds of years, have ritualistic significance in Indian. Yellow colour of turmeric is considered to be auspicious and yellow mark of turmeric solution is given invitation letter for marriage or on any item assign for holly occasion, gift etc.
Beauty Tip: Make the paste of Gram flour (Besan) -2 table spoon,Turmeric powder – ½ table spoon, and milk; to make paste of all three. Apply it to the face and leave it for 10-15 minute. Wash the face gently( Don’t rub).
Turmeric paste prevents and cures pigmentation, maintains pH factor and makes skin glowing.
Medicinal and Therapeutic Tip: In case of internal injury in body particularly of muscle, bone and ligaments(sprain);
*Mix one tea spoon of turmeric powder in boiling milk (200ml/One Glass); let it boil for one min. Drink hot like hot tea/coffee (mix sugar to enhance the taste).
*Heat the desire amount of Turmeric powder and water. Add a pinch of lime (You can get it from any Indian betel shop) in the paste and heat it for 1 minute. Apply this hot paste (tolerable to the skin) to the injured joint, muscle, ligament(sprain) and tie a cotton cloth over it(caution- No external injury should be there).
These are age-old and traditional home treatment and proved very good anti-inflammatory, has been practiced in Indian sub-continent.
