School Cafeteria meals from around the World

School lunches and the selection of picks from the school canteen are something we all reminisence about from time to time. So when I stumbled across this collection it was quite hard to ignore it. Following are some selected pictures of school lunches from around the world. Hope you enjoy and it and perhaps relate them to your school days!

School lunch from Korea. The plate has tofu soup, a banana, some noodle stuff, broccoli (most probably), kimchi, and rice. Quite filling and healthy.

A school lunch from Japan. I love how neatly it is all arranged, rice topped with some dry seaweed salad (looks like dried hijiki), an orange wedge, a cloeslaw like side, tofu soup and tea. Refreshing!

A Chinese school lunch, and it has a fish, something that looks like kimchi, rice, broccoli, cauliflower, and a soup. Pretty filling!

The average lunch in an American school. Healthy and balanced with chicken, beans, milk, salad, a roll and crackers.

Being an Indian I was schocked to find this as the only shot of an Indian school lunch. As the author had pointed out at the original site, this lunch is most probably served at some government run free school for children from poor families and only has rice, daal (cooked lentils) and pickles. Good lunch lunches in india include a full 'thali' or plate with vegetbales, a curry, rice, salad and mixed vegetable or fruit pickle.

School lunch from France, mussels, an artichoke, grapefruit, cheesecake, baguette and fries. Nice and delicious... though a bit indulgent!

School lunch from Malawi, bean stew with rice mixed with shredded veggies. Frugal but filling I bet! For those who never heard of it, Malawi is a country in South East Africa.

Actually Moules et Frites is very French! The Chinese lunch probably containsd maybe chicken, as KimChee is not typical in China. Kim Chee is typical in Korea and ocassional some Japanese restaurants might serve it. I think the Indian school lunch is not typical as you say. I would think there would be veggies and not just dahl and rice. Many US school lunches are heavy on burgers, pizza and spagetti. Carbs are cheap, but not well balanced meal!

I don't know how much you know about Europe. BUT Moules frites is one of BELGIANS national dishes. And no, Belgium is NOT the same as France.

I agree with Shantihh. I have heard so many parents complain that school lunch in U.S is more of unhealthy burgers & spagetti. Also the French School lunch with a plateful of french fries and cheesecake does not seem healthy and well balanced!

oops.. ur were right about mussels and fries :D I'll remedy that in the blog! thanks for the feedback.... even i'm not sure about the kimchee in Chinese lunch. it does look more like kimchee than chicken in the frist go... I actually saw other Chinese lunch pics with kimchee too. so it may not be uncommon
