Saravana Bhawan

This Saturday I went to the Sarvana Bhawan on Wood Avenue in Iselin NJ with a few of my friends. We were 8 of us and baring 1 nobody else wanted to eat Indian. But the proximity of the place and the strong will of that one person to eat at a South Indian restaurant was enough for us to choose Saravana.

I have been there before but only on weekday afternoons. I could only imagine how crowded the place would be. But it was only a 15 minute wait. Not bad. The 14 Idly was good, reminded me of my days in Chennai. When I was first intorduced to Sarvana Bhawan it was 10 years ago and at that time South Indian food was a luxury as I am from the Northern part of India. Some of us ordered Mini meals. It was awesome. It came with mini idlies, small dosa and a rava kichidi. The dessert was a cracked wheat kheer/payasam. I had never had that before. It was good.

The Rava dosa was ok, the masala in the dosa was below average. The adai was excellent. We had badam halwa and gulab jamun for dessert. The Jamuns were not to the mark but the badam halwa was good although a little too sweet.

The coffee was the highlight of the dinner. It was simply out of this world. I will go back again just for the coffee. The place seemed a little too small. Food was served quickly. For a party of eight we were out in an hour and 10 minutes.

Next time you are in the area try it. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

This Saturday, i have also went to a resturant near my house named 'Banana Leaf' Known for Excellent food. Two award winning chefs, one of whom has been the only South Indian chef in the National Curry Chef of the Year Competition - twice.
