Recycled Urine instead of Water!

Talk about drinking recycled urine!!! Do you remember the scene from Water World were Kevin Costner recycles his urine and drinks it! Thats exactly what  the NASA astronauts have set out to do.  Its not just their urine and sweat that is gonna be recycled but also that of the lab rats! Yes, you read that right!

The crew of the International Space Station (ISS) tasted the recycled version of their  own urine just a few days ago. This is the first time a close looped water recycling system has been initiated aboard the ISS.  I will screen the jargon and get to the root of the process.

NASA has created a Regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) that, simply converts water content that comes from the breathe, sweat and urine of the astronauts and also of  the lab animals into drinking water!!! They are even working on recycling the bathing water!!

The system is great for NASA as the problem of carrying gallons of water for their voyages is now solved. With this new system, they will just have to recycle the water that they take initially. Yes,  using the urine of the lab animals is definitely taking it too far but just imagine what it could mean if the process is introduced to us earthlings?

Give the fact that we are doing a great job at conserving earth, a water world or desert seems to be a part of our geographical future. We just might have to drink recycled urine at some point! Wish they would develop a personal system by then. At least one could know whose urine one was drinking!! So,  what do you think of recyled urine as a new beverage!!

Some drugs come through with the urine. In WW2 penicillin was so precious that GI's urine was saved, processed, and then used again. Remember that a healthy person has by definition sterile urine-but no one can know for sure without a test. Sadly, our water supplies now test positive for antibiotics in many cities.
