Rama Nayak's Udipi Shri Krishna Boarding

Ram Nayak's Udipi Shri Krishna Boarding is said to be the world's first Udipi restaurant.  I am not sure but I love this South Indian way of eating on a banana leaf!  Easy way to do the dishes just roll it up and toss on to the compost pile!
This restaurant is located just outside Matunga station in Mumbai and every one knows it so just ask and they will point it out to you right away.
They serve South Indian thali on a  large banana leaf.  To me it is could the longest, most economical and healthiest buffet anywhere. Walking up to the first floor of what is Matunga's municipal market. Sometimes special desserts are served at no extra charge. Usually it has been some type of pudding when I have been there.
It is a small little place and you aren't sure it is even a restaurant but the snells wafting down the narrow corridor thats leads to the entrance have you convinced you are indeed in luck.
Lungi as worn in Kochi
It is always packed at lunch with a long que.  The A man in a white shirt and matching lungi as worn in South India gives you coupons after you pay a few rupies, and after a short wait you enter a very tidy little restaurant.  First you wash your hands as you eat with your right hand as is the practice and works quite nicely!
Now the fun begins - A fresh clean, slightly wet banana leaf is placed on the granite table infront of you. Also stainless steel glass of cold water is servd.  Stainless drinking glasses is typical all over India.
Step 1
Three varities of vegetables are served on the banana leaf always includes a dahl type dish. Some salt is added on the side and along with some green
mango pickle which I adore!Step 2
A small glass of buttermilk and some curd are served as well.  Curd in India is simply outstanding and can't be confused with the American "yogurt".  A ghee brushed roti and some papad are placed on the center of the banana leaf.Step 3
And while you are eating and savouring this amazing food when you aren't watching more magically re-appears. By the time sambhar and some tangy rasam is served you are ready for a nap as your tummy is so full.
Step 4
Once you've finished with the rotis, rice is served and eaten with the sambhar and rasam. This will be continued if you don't motion enough.  <smile> Time for an afternoon nap for sure.  But I usually have only taken a mid-day break with my friend Anu and we must get on with out day.
This banana leaf is traditionally used in South India.
