Eating deli meat gives you bladder cancer is what a recent research conducted at National Cancer Institute revealed. Deli meat is actually the processed meat of animals. It includes meat of animals such as beef, poultry, pork etc.

This report which got published in the journal Cancer was the result of the research carried out on 300,000 adults, aged between 50-71 years, belonging to eight U.S. states.

The diets of these adults were examined and the consumption of nitrate and nitrite by every individual was estimated. Nitrates and nitrites are used for preserving deli meat and are considered to be carcinogenic.

As per the researchers, the nitrates and nitrites are originators of N-nitroso compounds (NOCs). In animals, these NOCs are responsible for growth of tumors in various body organs including the bladder.

The study was carried for a period of eight long years. And it was found that the people who consumed the processed or deli meat were at 30% higher risk of getting a bladder cancer. The nitrates and nitrites were responsible for such outcome.

The study is one of the most recent studies which connect deli meat consumption to risk of cancer.

Also, as per the researchers, consuming high levels of red meat in both processed and unprocessed form was related to the non- Hispanic, white ethnicity who consume a lot of beverages, have a high BMI and are young of age. These people also had high calorie consumption and did not get any physical exercises.

Thus, do not eat deli meat too much, as these packaged meats are not as healthy as they look.
