Oprah’s Weight Loss Journey
Oprah has a reputation of erratic and inconsistent dieting akin to a yo-yo. In 1998, she lost 67 pounds by embarking on a liquid protein diet. She slimmed down so drastically that she appeared on her talk show in size 10 Calvin Klein jeans. She even wheeled a wagon loaded with ft to represent what she had lost. Talking on this episode, Oprah admits in 2005:"I had literally starved myself for four months - not a morsel of food. Two hours after that show, I started eating to celebrate. Of course, within two days those jeans no longer fit!"
True to her worst fears, Oprah gained back the 67 lbs she lost once again in 1990 in just 22 years. She openly admitted her failure by quoting-"I've been dieting since 1977. The reason I failed is that diets don't work. I tell people, if you're underweight, go on a diet and you'll gain everything you lost plus more. Now I'm trying to find a way to live in a world with food without being controlled by it, without being a compulsive eater. That's why I say I will never diet again."
In 1994, Oprah tried to remedy the situation by appointing a personal trainer and master chef. She even finished the Marine Corps Marathon and was determined to keep up the good work. She doggedly kept at her slimming regime from 1996 – 2007. In 2007, Oprah revealed that a thyroid problem had been the result of her weight gain.
Way back in 2008, Oprah plunged into a 21 Day Cleanse website which she flaunted on her website endlessly. Ever since she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2007, Oprah has had to relook at her diet and eating habits. In this 21 day Cleanse program, Oprah had to abstain from alcohol, caffeine, meat, fish, eggs, poultry, dairy, sugar and gluten. Then what did she eat, I wonder? She banked on vegetables and fruits for vitamins and minerals and soy milk for protein. Her daily menu comprised of Soy products like soy sausage, soy milk, tofu, tempeh and soy yoghurt.
In 2009, Oprah went back to 200 lbs from the 160 she has been at in 2006. Confessing her disgust at her own binging nature, she writes in O magazine-“I'm mad at myself. I'm embarrassed. I can't believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I'm still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think, 'How did I let this happen again? "
In 2009, Oprah went a step further and disclosed the problem she was facing with weight gain by openly displaying images of her grossly overweight 200 lb figure next to her earlier skinnier self. With the launch of the Best Life Series on TV, she turned to fitness guru Bob Greene for help. Following the tips from Greene’s “The Best Life Diet Cookbook” Oprah apparently slimmed down.
In all, the lesson we learn from Oprah must be her enormous will power with which she is combating her erratic weight gains despite her medical problems. Over to you, Oprah, Well done!!!
