Obama Thanksgiving

The most famous home in America is gonna keep up the tradition of Thanksgiving dinner this year too and for the First Lady Michelle Obama, it is going to be nothing new. Before her First Ladies like Mamie Eisenhower and Laura Bush have also instructed the White House chefs to turn out traditional Thanksgiving dinner. While change is a constant in the White House, the tradition of having a familiar Thanksgiving meal has been kept up by each residing family.

This year, on November 22, the Obamas shall be celebrating their fourth Thanksgiving in the White House. While everything else about the meal is a closely-guarded secret, the menu is not. This year's Thanksgiving menu mainly features a Kale and Fennel salad. The salad is made with ingredients sourced from the iconic White House Kitchen Garden, which has now become a symbol for the First Lady's fight for  healthy lifestyle. However, the health crusade doesn't stop there. There will also be a light dressing, made with shallots, lemon juice, olive oil, and red wine vinegar, instead of a fattening dressing.

President's favorite part of Thanksgiving is pumpkin, so this year, the pumpkin pie is being given  makeover with some acorn squash, to give it color as well as complexity.

If you see Obama's Thanksgiving meals through his years as a President, you will realize that although the thought running through is the same as established by President Abraham Lincoln, who declared it a national holiday in 1863. However, it still lacks the flair of the out-of-context Thanksgiving dinner of President George W. Bush, who sometimes sampled a Morelia-style gazpacho, or that of President William Howard Taft, who was as famous for his adventurous palate as he was for his bushy moustache.

But that is where the Obamas' strength lies - in connecting to the American people in their own language. Therefore, the White House Thanksgiving meal, under the Obamas, feels more real and close.
