Obama Celebrates Father’s Day In Advance
Even as the rest of us would wait till Sunday, June 17, to celebrate Father’s Day, President Barack Obama has taken a lead by celebrating an early Father’s day at a barbecue restaurant, Kenny’s BBQ, located on the Capitol Hill. He was accompanied by four dads for a BBQ lunch.
The lunch was organized as part of the “Fatherhood Buzz,” an initiative launched by the Department of Health and Human Services. This initiative is an attempt to connect with dads who need financial literacy help, job training, and other resources, to play a father’s role better. Out of the four Dads who got to lunch with President Obama, two fathers are on active military duty while two are neighborhood barbers.
Over a lunch of beef ribs and steamed vegetables, the President chatted with his guests on the importance of fatherhood. He spoke to the fathers about the importance of being actively engaged in the well-being of their children and family.
On the significance of barbershops being an instrument in reaching such fathers, Obama said, “Barbershops are where a lot of men come, and we want to work with barbershops to figure out how we can get better information to fathers about resources that are available to them.”
Though, Obama’s favorite food is cowboy chili, he opted for barbecued ribs, collard greens, black-eyed peas, rice, and corn muffins for this Father’s Day menu. During the lunch of heaping plates of barbecue ribs, President Obama joked with the men, shared his experiences and also sought their views on fatherhood.
