Mustard as Condiment for Fried Fish?
Hi There,![]()
I am wondering about Mustard use as a condiment in fried fish. Is this something that originated in the Soul Food Era, or is it something people have done all over the world for many years.
I am an army brat and have thus lived in California, Minnesota, Texas, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Florida, but I ask people at restaurants for Mustard for my fried fish and they look at me as if I am crazy!
My friend and I recentlty went out to eat and he saw me dipping beer battered fish in Mustard and he laughed, and asked the waitress if she had ever heard of anyone doing this, and if it was just a down ssouth thing.
Please help me any way you can with some answers. Is this just something my Dad used and liked or does it have some (any) kind of past history.
Thank you for your time in this matter

Hello Dazzler1365, you will be delighted to know that most of the north Indians use mustard powder in their fish recipe. Also, I use mustard as a condiment for fish curry, however I never heard for fried fish...

Hi Dazzler!I've been using mustard as a condiment for fish since I was a kid.In fact I'm making talapia now. I grew up in Dayton&Cincinnati. Mustard is my favorite condiment. I use it on burgers, hot dogs, brats, fish, and even chips. I saw an uncle once put mustard on chips. I thought it was the craziest thing in the world. I tried it,loved it,and have been doing it ever since. When I go to fast food joints&restaurants I always ask for mustard for my fish. I always get strange looks and asked "Mustard? For fish?"

I use Dijon mustard for French Fries and also for salads mixed with vinegar, oil and herbs. Using mustard (good mustard like Dijon) is typical in France. Mustard Sauce is great on many veggies and meats. The only way I use catsup is if mixed with chipotle!
