Marketing your "MOM" skills

If your a mom looking to reenter the workforce. There are a few tips to help you jump back into the game.

1. Think about all the skills you have gained from being a mom: Time management skills, multi-tasking, patience, listening skills, etc. There are a lot of skills you have gained from motherhood.

Write a list of at least ten skills you have gained from being a mom that you could bring into the workforce. I just named a few, what other skills can you add to the list?

2. Network - network with everyone you know. This includes your neighbor, your friends, family members, people you volunteer with, other moms you meet with at moms groups, mommy & me, charity events, PTA, etc. Keep spreading the word.

Write a list of at least five people you can start networking with this week.

3. Are you looking for a job or a career? A job can be a means to an end, a paycheck. You will have a passion for a career, a love for what you are doing. A career will be long lasting.

4. Research - take some time out to research your chosen field. What is new in your field. Make sure to be up to date on what is going on in your field. This is easy to do with the internet, you can do your research from home.

5. Update your resume - dust off your resume, make sure you have a copy in your word document files that you can update or change at any time. This will also allow you the freedom to e-mail your resume to a company. Make sure you update your resume by adding volunteer work, coaching, fundraising events, etc.

* While you are adding your resume, make sure to add a cover letter to your word document files.

6. Know your value system - what is important to you? If family comes first then working in education might be for you. The vacations will match your kids schedule and summers off. Is it money you need, benefits, training? Think about it.

Going back to work after a few years will be both exciting and overwhelming but if you prepare for your new chapter in your life, it will make for a smoother transition. I hope these tips help.
