Leafy Greens Cause More Food Poisoning Than Meat

If you have always felt cynical about the advice to eat leafy green vegetables daily, now is the time to justify your doubts. You can find support in a recently finished government study that says that leafy greens like spinach and lettuce are a major source of food poisoning, even more than other sources like meat.

 

One of the researchers associated with this study, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however did not ask people to give up eating leafy vegetables altogether. She, instead, advised that one should wash such vegetables thoroughly before cooking or consuming raw.

 

The study also found that although sticking to a plant diet may have got a lot of people sick but more people died because of eating contaminated poultry. This means vegetarians still had an edge over the carnivores. Food poisoning affects one out of every 6 Americans ever year, which includes 3,000 deaths. The current study has been the most comprehensive ever, as far as food poisoning instances between the years 1998 and 2008 are concerned.

 

The CDC report also asks the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to assign more staff and other resources to inspect fruits and vegetables being sold to the public. The news comes on the heels of the announced proposal of the FDA that said that the Agency would revise hygiene standards for farm workers.

 

Well, whether that will be enough or not, only time will tell. However, till then, just wash those veggies properly before you eat them.
