Kerala Breakfast Menu
Kerala breakfasts for me are a yummy treat. The wonderful treat of wandering through a myriad tastes and flavors and yes, each one of them have a high nutritional value. My day generally starts with a crispy dosa or a soft idli with chutney or sambar and if I am really in the mood, then both chutney and sambar. Here are my top 5 picks of healthy, nutritious and delicious Kerala breakfast ideas.
1-Dosa

A crispy dosa with sambar and chutney is power packed with carbohydrates and proteins. Just the energy and nutrition I need to see me through my hectic schedule.
2- Appam
Soft crispy delight that is made with rice and fermented with yeast. You can serve them with vegetable or chicken stew, the Kerala egg curry made with coconut milk or the kerala kadala(chana) curry which has a rich brown fried coconut gravy.
3-Idli
A low fat low cal steamed breakfast, the idli is my pick when I want to have a nutritious breakfast but minus the calories. There are so many variations possible here too from rava idlis, raagi to many more.
4-Puttu
Tasty puttu is made of rice flour and is yet another steamed speciality. It is served with the traditional kadala curry (kala chana). I love to have it with sugar and the delicious steamed Kerala bananas too.
5- Idiappam
This too is a steamed breakfast that resembles rice noodles. There are many of the instant varieties available today making it really easy to get the morning breakfast ready. Best served with a vegetable or chicken stew.
