Jalfrezi Dethrones Britain’s Fav Chicken Tikka Masala

25-Jul-2011 by FitGal

Britain’s favorite dish, chicken tikka masala, is heartbroken these days. This is because it has been replaced by Jalfrezi as the country’s new favorite curry, relegating the good ole’ chicken tikka masala to the eighth place in a new survey. With the results of this new survey, it seems that the Britons are losing their taste for chicken tikka masala.

The survey found that Jalfrezi, a far hotter dish, cooked with an abundance of green chillis, has become the favorite dish at more than 10,000 Indian restaurants throughout Britain. This news also indicates a more heartening development that the Britons are finally becoming more adventurous with their palate, showing much higher tolerance towards foods with hot flavor.

At second place in the survey results is “Madras,” which is another dish made with a spicy and generous contribution of chillis.

The survey, conducted by “Chaat,” an in-house magazine of the British Curry Club, considered the opinions of more than 1,058 Britons. While 21% of Britons voted for Jalfrezi, 18% spoke in favor of Madras. Another Indian dish, originated in the Kashmir region, Roganjosh, found favor with more than 10% surveyed Britons.

According to the leading restaurant owners of Britain, an average Briton is “getting used to more spice in their dishes.”

About Jalfrezi

Jalfrezi is a taste of Indian cuisine from the 16th century kitchen. This recipe is basically made with meat marinated in a mixture of green chillis, peppers, onion, and tomatoes and cooked in oil in a dry, thick sauce. The word Jalfrezi literally means “hot-fry,” conveying an honest reference to what one should expect on eating it. chicken tikka masala

The dish has its origins in the Mughlai cuisine because the Mughals dominated the Indian subcontinent between 16th and 18th centuries and introduced many new flavors to the Indian palate.

About Chicken Tikka Masala

This blog would be incomplete without a tribute to the good old dish, which is believed to have been first made inside a Glasgow curry house, where a customer’s complaint that his chicken was very dry, became the cause behind this inventive dish.

Conclusion

With the Britons having stuck too long with mild curries, the kitchen experts and public are welcoming the survey results with excitement.
