J.D Salinger is a venerated name, most familiar to people who love reading. So when I found the information that J. D. Salinger liked Burger King my curiosity was piqued. I have read his book ‘Catcher in the Rye’ couple of times and stocked my library with his earlier books. Here was a writer who was supposedly a recluse and lived like a hermit but some revelations about him showed that he liked burger king just like some others.

As the story of his life unfolded in bits and pieces revelations about Salinger’s likes and dislikes became public. The cause for the disclosures was the release of 50 private letters and postcards written by Salinger to his friend Donald Hertog (1986-2002). These letters were donated to the University of East Anglia. Salinger died last year at the age of 91 and Mr. Hartog died in 2007. From these letters it became evident that Salinger was not really a hermit as people assumed him to be. He just liked his privacy since the attention he got from people was too much for him. He enjoyed going to restaurants, concerts, galleries, the theater and the zoo.

Salinger enjoyed being his bus trips as a tourist visiting Nantucket, Niagara Falls and Grand Canyon. He was also a tennis fan who liked john McEnroe and Tim Henman.

His choice of music was revealed as the ‘Three Tenors’ especially Jose Carreras. Politics was not his most favorite and he thought that the US politicians were an odious bunch.

His disdain for the publishing world was also very obvious after the publications of his first book. He stayed away from them and everybody else who got nosey with him.

He turned out to be a fast food critic of sorts, since he thought Burger King Hamburgers were better than those from the rival chains. Now Burger King could cash in on this and use it as their slogan. Maybe the slogan can say something to the effect of ‘J D Salinger liked Burger King and you will too.’
