Is Diet by Blood Type logical?
In today’s modern and dynamic world diet is a big issue .Due to increasing health awareness , people are inquisitive about healthy and balanced diet . Keeping this in mind Blood Type Diet was conceived by Peter D'Adamo, which has been given in his book “ Eat Right 4 Your Type” and “Live Right 4 Your Type”, who based it on the premise that blood type has its own unique antigen marker that reacts in a negative way with certain foods. Also, individuals have varying levels of stomach acidity and digestive enzymes, and these traits seem to be correlated with blood type.
Peter D'Adamo recommended various types of diet classified according to the blood group:
1.for Blood Group A: He proclaimed the blood group A as The Cultivator. He believed that they are visionary and analytical. The strength of these people lie in that they adapt easily to dietary and environmental condition .They possess the weakness that they are unable to digest and metabolize meat protein easily .He recommended vegetarian food for those people.
2for Blood Group B: He proclaimed the blood group B as The Nomad .He believed that they are Balanced, flexible, creative. The strength of these people lie in that they have Strong immune system and versatile adaptation to dietary and environmental changes .They possess no natural weaknesses .He recommended dairy products for those people.
3.for Blood Group AB: He proclaimed the blood group AB as The Enigma. He believed that they are Rare, versatile, compassionate. The strength of these people lie in that they are designed for modern conditions .They have highly tolerant immune system .They possess the weakness that they have sensitive digestive tract and open to microbial invasion .He recommended vegetarian food and dairy products for those people.
4.for Blood Group O : He proclaimed the blood group A as The Hunter .He believed that they are Strong, self-reliant, leader. The strength of these people lie in that they have strong immune system and Natural defenses against infections. They possess the weakness that they are intolerant to new dietary and environmental conditions. He recommended meat-rich diet along the lines of the Paleolithic diet for those people.
This dietary suggestion seem to be very simple but the fact is that it is not a such simple one .I am a foodie and I believe that our taste ,climatic conditions ,culture and food availability provide a guideline for the diet and it is generally seen that people abide by it. People in colder latitudes generally opt for high energy reach diet of meat to meet the demand of higher energy by their body. Some people due to their religious belief do not consume meat though having the blood group O. Jains and Buddhist are the most common example.
D'Adamo's Blood type diet has met with others many criticisms. The fundamental criticisms are first, that none of his hundreds of citations to others' research on blood groups directly support his claims of differential food tolerances, and second, that he provides no comparative clinical trials demonstrating efficacy of his diet.
One criticism of D'Adamo's hypotheses and recommendations claims that he provided inadequate evidence. For example, his first book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, published in 1997, contains only a bibliography. Most of his subsequent books, however, have been thoroughly referenced as far as his general theory. However, the reasons for the classifications of the foods in his diet remains undocumented.
Overall the Blood type diet is a very innovative diet plan .The interesting fact is that those people of blood group ‘O’ who prefer non –vegetarian diet ,now have a reason to do so and also the people of Blood Group ‘A’ who want to restrain from non-vegetarian diet have now a solid foundation to restrain from it.
