Cheese is considered to be a controversial and confusing food especially during pregnancy.  Inspite of being a rich source of protein and calcium, some researchers suggest avoiding cheese while others say its safe. Let’s find out the facts behind these controversies!

 

 

Nutrition in Cheese:

  • Cheese is a remarkable source of protein and good source of calcium.
  • It has a very low carbohydrate content and a 30-40 percent of fat content.
  • Harder the cheese, greater the fat content.
  • Vitamin B12 and minerals like zinc, iodine and selenium are found abundant in cheese.
  • It also has a longer shelf-life and is also been proven to highly beneficial in maintaining good health.

 

Cheese in Pregnancy:

  • Certain specific kinds of cheeses are capable of permitting the growth of a bacteria named LISTERIA, after the pasteurization (main process in cheese production) process, which could act adversely on the health of the unborn baby and so those particular kinds of cheeses must be avoided during pregnancy.
     
  • These types of bacteria’s cause mild level of flu in adults, and pregnant women, who are less immune, are very vulnerable to infection easily. Even though these kind of infections are very rare, cheese is considered to be a risky food in pregnancy since you will not find the infection immediately after eating.
