How to minimize the time you spend

in the kitchen

Mess in place- It is a french culinary term that has helped me in so many ways. I hope it helps you, it is a very easy concept.

Mise en place

o   Is important to understand that the fastest and most simple way to cook is to keep your mess in place.

o   Organize yourself, before you start to cook get all the ingredients needed for the recipe and prepare them as indicated.

o   If you prepare yourself it will take you less time to cook and it will also prepare you for what’s ahead, just in case you are missing some ingredients and need to find a quick substitute.

How to prepare your mise en place

o   Gather all the ingredients in the recipe

o   Collect all the utensils you may need to prepare the ingredients

o   Clean, cut and portion all the ingredients in the recipe

o   Prepare your cooking equipment; turn on the oven, stove, etc.

It's so true Milani! Unless we get ourselves organized things are not gonna go well inside the kitchen; not only that, we tend to spend double the time. I have been practising this mise en place - whenever, I had to cook something, the first thing I would do is to see if I have all the ingredients ready on the table, so that I can just whip up the dish in minutes, rather than roaming around all the while looking for the missing ingredient in the list. :)

Hey Milani, thats a cool tip.. I totally agree that keeping the mess in place could help save a big share of time, i was quite ignorant to this concept initially, later on the browned (above the limit!) dishes thought me the lesson ;) Thanks for sharing the tips, Love, Lia

You know i learned most of my cooking from my mother..and they are super beings..they don't need measuring spoons or cook books..they just do things..you can just imagine the amount of mess i created when i tried doing the same.. it was not too hard to figure i needed to get more organized..so now i cook more or less according to your tips..mise en place..everything in its place..waste goes into the waste bowl..a section for dry ingredients a section for wet ingredients, measuring tools and the right collection of vessels! All these help!

Hi Milani! thanks for sharing all the above tips. Right from my childhood, I am always an organized person, may be coz; i was brought up in a hostel. So, I never created any kinda mess in my kitchen or at any corner of my sweet home. But, I know most of the indian ladies are expert in this (messing up things), so these are nice tips for them:)
