How Informed Are You About What You Are Eating?

These days marketers have made a lot of changes in their marketing strategy to sell the same old product in such a way that it seems as if it’s new and more beneficial to our health. For this they just have to rename the ingredients and repackage their products in an attractive box. What really bothers me is that we are using those products without even knowing their properties. We get transfixed by their packaging and believe that the particular product is very good for our health. Advertisers count on consumer ignorance to sell their products, but with a little research into some of the most common supermarket buzzwords we know that there’s more to these labels than meets the eye.

Grocery Store

Green tea

Green tea is as ancient as the world itself. But sellers realize that by repackaging it, adding high fructose corn syrup, and labeling “low-carbs” to the front will make the consumer believe that it actually can burn their calories, boost the immune system, and  the consumer will surely buy these so-called healthy tea.

Pinnothin

Till date, Pinnothin has not got the honor to be labeled on the ingredient list, but in the near-by future, it will be sold as a weight loss aid/supplement/or nutraceutical ingredient. Taking it 30 minutes before the meal, you won’t feel like much hungry. It actually reduces your appetite by 9%.

PC-SPES

PC-SPES is an herbal supplement which is believed to reduce the chances of getting prostate cancer. It is sold as a pure herbal product, but when research is conducted, it is found that it actually is laced with prescription drug including estrogens, painkillers, and blood thinners.

No Sugar Added

This term doesn’t mean that the product doesn’t have any sugar. It simply means that during processing, sugar was not added. If a product is devoid of sugar, the labeling will be “sugar-free”.

Probiotics

Probiotics means live bacteria which actually is human friendly. It is present in our guts and yogurt as well. When the good points of probiotics became well-known, sellers start to write probiotic as a major ingredient in yogurt.

Genetically Modified Organisms

GMO are the crops or animals that have been genetically engineered so that they can be disease resistant and survive certain adverse conditions. Though their negative effects are not known till date, they are supposed to be allergic to some, especially children.

Trans-Fat Free

People are becoming aware of certain high risk diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, etc. So, the government announced that products containing 0.5 grams or more must be labeled as “trans-fat” containing product. Products having less than 0.5 grams can be labeled as trans-fat free. So, the best way to check whether a product is really devoid of trans-fat, look for hydrogenated oil in the ingredients list.

Free-Range

Free-range means that the animal, especially poultry, was allowed to roam freely. It simply says that the meat is cruelty free. Free range doesn’t describe the outside condition of the environment.

The present scenario of competition gives us a very clear idea that in future also; we are going to be assaulted by the fake names, repackaging, and some other tricks. It’s our duty to be very cautious while buying any product and always do at least some research about the ingredients.
