The officials of the health department destroys fruit in Chicago simply because the person who had bought them with the intention of selling fruit based dishes did not have the required license.  Thousands of residents read the news of how US health department destroyed thousands of dollars worth of fruit in incredulous disbelief which gave details of the health department's high-handedness.

The West Town Kitchen as well as the Sunday Diner Club caterers had to lose almost $1000 worth of fruits due to the health department's high-handedness. The inspectors clarified that there had been no health problems at all. Yet the health department destroys fruit at regular intervals simply because the chefs do not possess the requisite license although their expertise in preparing food cannot be questioned. Flora Lazar, the pastry chef had to stand aside and watch with horror as the drama unfolded with the officials pouring bleach over raspberries, peaches and plums. Unable to tolerate such a loss she requested them to allow her to give them to her son. Health department's high-handedness was too gross to be believed they refused to permit her even that and she just watched in mute silence as the newspapers reported how the health department destroys fruit in Chicago.

Greg Nelson, one of the inspectors called the police in order to confiscate the granola bar from Lazar’s son. The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection also failed to look into the reason of why the health department destroys fruit, good organic produces at that. The health department's high-handedness left her heart broken and devastated especially as she had to bear the financial loss just before Valentines Day when business would have been booming.

Flora Lazar admits that she had absolutely no idea that the health department destroys fruit and had actually invited the inspectors into her kitchen as she sought a new license. She had also paid $600 for it. She ruefully admits that she would have got a better deal if she had been dishonest. The health department destroys fruit that is left in the kitchen without bothering to look elsewhere. Lazar puts her financial loss down to $6000 but laments the loss of fresh fruit purees which had been prepared from the fruits harvested during the Midwestern ripeness.

The bags of produce were completely covered with bleach leaving them unfit for consumption. Lazar feels completely helpless not knowing what to do even as the health department destroys fruit in Chicago. Her story revealing how the health department destroys fruit has been posted on the Huffington Post. Photographs of both Lazar and her son standing aside while the health department destroys fruit have also been uploaded.

Chicago is full of small time caterers who share kitchen space and make do with communal kitchens. Their positions have now been put in jeopardy even as the stories of how the health department destroys fruit have started making the rounds.
