Looking for a substitute for meat? Try the Garbanzo beans. Commonly known as chickpeas, this is something that one can have in place of meat, as it is will work well for both the vegan and the diabetic. Garbanzo can be used in stews and pastas and other chilli recipes. As these are extremely low in fat, they are sources of protein and can be used in most recipes.

Why This?

These beans are high in protein and fiber with zero cholesterol. Substituting these beans for meat in your meal, will not only lower cholesterol, it will also control the levels of sugar in the blood because it has fiber. When mixed with whole grains, this bean can provide a high fiber meal, which will in turn reduce chances of constipation and prevent digestive disorders like the irritable bowel syndrome.

How It Works

The legumes are known to provide protein which can be compared to that from meat. One can substitute half a cup of garbanzo for every ounce of meat. You can even switch turkey and meat patties with garbanzo beans. A cup or two of beans will give you as much as six burgers, and by adding some salt, spices, pepper, carrots and celery you have everything that it takes to make some great burger.

You can also substitute garbanzo in a traditional shepherd's pie, which is usually made from minced meat. Mix one cup of garbanzo along with one cup of kidney beans, for a high protein main course, minus any meat.

Try making your special garbanzo dish with a 14 ounce can of tomatoes and a 15 ounce can of beans, along with some garlic, Italian seasoning and garlic. Sans the meat, this will still be an excellent source of protein. This is indeed a true blessing to vegans and people with health issues.
