How to store Leftover Cake
Celebrations call for cakes and huge cakes. After the parties, you have leftovers of the cakes. Many of us do not know what can be done with the cake left from the previous night’s party. Some even are left with batter and wonder if they can bake it later!
A simple step to keep your cake fresh could be to cut it into smaller pieces and then store it in an air tight container at room temperature.
For those who believe reusing the leftover cakes and cake mixes, some of these freezing tips can be put to use. These tips also work for those who do preparation beforehand. Freezing cakes and cake batters or mixtures could be very useful.
Freezing Cakes and Cake Mixtures
Cover the cake with a moisture proof wrapping like aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Now, place it into a metallic container to help retain its shape, moisture and save it from catching freezer odor. Both, iced and un-iced cakes can be frozen, only precaution to be taken is that the icing is not of a freezing type. The cakes with no fat are unfit to be frozen, as they tend to dry out.
You can wrap an un-iced cake and place it in freezer, for an iced cake you need to put the cake into freezer wait till the icing freezes and then wrap it. The un-iced cakes can be frozen for three months and the iced cakes up to two months.
For freezing unbaked cake mixtures, it can be replaced into an air tight container. Freeze it uncovered first, once frozen cover it tightly. All the cakes and cakes mixes should be allowed to thaw on room temperature. It takes nearly 2-3 hours for the process. In case of iced cakes, they should be allowed to get thawed in the fridge. The wrapping should be cautiously removed before keeping iced cake for thawing.
Storing leftover pieces and scraps
If there a lot of tiny cake pieces that can’t be served further and even some scraps. You can probably collect all of it into a bowl, mash it into tinier crumbs. Now check if the scrambled pieces can be held in a hand like a ball. If not, use dairy creamer or caramel syrup or some other flavored syrup to add some moisture and flavor. Keep checking the consistency of the cake. Make small balls of this cake mixture, place them on baking sheet and freeze for about half an hour to overnight. Melt some chocolate and dip the balls in it and sprinkle some colorful candies and choco-chips before the chocolate freezes. You can place the balls into cake cups or paper moulds for serving them.
