Blue cheeses like French Roquefort, English Stilton, Italian Gorgonzola or American Maytag have a unique flavor due to the presence of edible cheese mold. Blue cheeses are made from cows' or goats' milk like all other cheeses but is different from the rest due to the blue green mold spores cultivated intentionally on the cheese. .

Here is an easy way to store crumbled blue cheese    

You will need

  • Original container of the cheese
  • A freezer friendly container or 2 plastic zip lock bags.
  • Aluminum foil.

Instructions

  1. The original container is best for storing crumbled blue cheese. If you have discarded the container or if the container is not in good condition, store crumbled blue cheese in double zip lock bags or in tin foil or a combination of both. This will prevent the crumbled blue cheese from drying and help to extend its storage for a couple of months or more.
  2. Store crumbled blue cheese in the refrigerator at 40 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit
  3. It is better to store crumbled blue cheese in the coldest portion of your refrigerator like the cheese keeper drawer.
  4. Crumbled blue cheese can also be stored freezer but freezing can alter the texture of a blue cheese as with any other food. However, storing crumbled blue cheese in the freezer will not affect the flavor of the cheese.
  5. If you have an unopened crumble cheese container, store thesealed container of crumbled blue cheese in the refrigerator until you require it.
  6. Once opened, it is best to use crumbled blue cheese within ten days of opening. If you are unable to do so, freeze the cheese and store for almost two months or more.
  7. Make sure to label and date the container before storing crumbled blue cheese in the freezer at an optimum temperature of 0 degrees Fahrenheit

 

Some tips for buying and storing crumbled blue cheese

  • Before buying crumbled blue cheese, be sure to check the expiration date on a package.
  • If the package has a very close best before date, check the containers at the back of the shelf.
  • Ensure crumbled blue cheese is well sealed and that the packaging is in good condition.
  • The texture of crumbled blue cheese change during freezing but since the flavor remains unaltered; it is the best method of storing crumbled blue cheese.
  • It is best not to use crumbled blue cheese that has a rancid taste or has if additional fresh mould has grown over the cheese.
