However to start making wine, first you will have to learn how to start making wine and then go about collecting necessary equipment and tools. Making wine at home is not simple but as you become an experienced home wine maker you can enjoy making different varieties of wine at home and share it with friends and family as holiday gifts or serve in a small party. The first time you start making wine at home, you will have to keep the below tools and equipment for wine making. This is only a one time investment and thereafter you will need to buy some of the ingredients only.

 

Wine making Kit

Wine making kits are available in plenty but instead of buying a kit it is better to gather all materials and equipment individually. This is because most of the equipment you need to start making wine are already present in your house. Here is a list of equipment that you can gather to make your own homemade wine kit.

 

Fermenting Equipment
A good collection of fermenting equipment is the key to start making wine successfully. You will need the following items.

  • Bucket with a lid
  • Large spoon or Wine paddle
  • Demijohns or Carboys with airlocks
  • Siphons
  • Tubing
  • Stoppers

 

Bottling Equipment
Ageing homemade wine is always done in glass bottles. So you will need -
  • Bottles
  • Corks (stoppers)
 
Additional Equipment
It is not mandatory to have these equipment but using these equipment will assist in speeding up certain process of winemaking. A list of additional equipment and their usefulness -
1. Wine Press: It is essential to have a wine press when you want to make juice at home for winemaking.
2. Testing equipment like test tubes (wine sample testing) , hydrometer (for sugar), wine thief (to draw wine sample), thermometer (for measuring temperature) , Vinometer (for alcohol) and acid test kit ( for checking acidity).
3. Bottle brush for cleaning glass bottle containers.
4. Sanitizer: Baby’s bottle sterilizer can be used.
5. Utensils: Invest in specific utensils available for home winemaking. Your regular kitchen utensils may not produce the best wine. Wine utensils can be purchased online or from special equipment stores.

 

Ingredients For Making Wine

Some of the ingredients that you buy initially to start making wine at home can be used for making wine later because they are used in small quantities and there will always be leftover.

  1. Fruit: Fresh or canned fruit. Fruit concentrates can also be used.
  2. Water
  3. Yeast
  4. Pectin Enzyme
  5. Tannin
  6. Sugar
  7. Potassium Sorbate
  8. Yeast nutrient
  9. Campden
  10. Wine Stabilizer
  11. Bentonite

 

Always check the wine recipe for the ingredients required before you start making wine. Ingredients may vary from recipe to recipe so keep the ingredients ready prior to starting.
