Principle behind Apple Puree
Apples tend to turn brown (as a result of oxidation) on being cut and more so when pureed raw, this is natural. Precooking apples prior to blending can help preventing this to an extent. Pre-cooking also would reduce the acidity in apples as well as tenderize the fruit flesh making pureeing easier.
Steps to Puree Apple
- Buy cooking apples from supermarket or pluck them fresh from the tree in the garden.
- Wash them well. Pat dry.
- Peel, deseed, and cut apples into smaller pieces.
- Boiling - Take a saucepan and add some water to this. Put in the apples and bring water to boil. Reduce the heat and let simmer for about 30 minutes over medium heat.
- Steaming – Place apple pieces in a vegetable steamer and let steam cook for about 20 minutes until apple pieces are tender.
- Microwaving – In a microwavable bowl, place the cut pieces of apple and cook on high for 10 minutes.
- Once apple pieces are cooked, transfer them into the blender container or food processor and process for 5 minutes to get a smooth puree. Alternately, they can be mashed with a food masher.
- Water can be added to adjust consistency.
- Chill the puree to bring it to room temperature prior to feeding babies.
