Pair wine with desserts?’ Doesn’t that sound odd? Well not really. Pairing wine with desserts is an art and needs careful attention. Wine is such a drink that not only goes well with appetizers and the main meal but if served the right way can be a perfect balance for desserts. While you pair wine with desserts, keep one thing in mind – the wine served should always be sweeter than the dessert. If the dessert is sweeter then the taste of the wine becomes bland and you do not enjoy the drink.

Pairing wine with desserts is a tough job. Different kinds of wine go with different desserts. Let us have a look some popular desserts and the right wine to be paired with them.

  • When you want to serve some kind of fruit desserts, serve some Gewürztraminers with it. This wine has a fruity flavour and is sweet in taste. Pair wine like this with a fruit dessert and you will have a perfect end to your meal. Wines like Viognier from California or a Moscato D’Asti also go well with fresh and dried fruits.
  • With ice creams you can pair it up with sherry. Sherry can not only be drunk separately but can also be poured over the ice cream to give the ice cream a completely new flavour.
  •

  • If you have decided to serve poached fruits like pear as dessert then the best wine to serve with it is similar to the wine it has been poached with. If the fruit has been poached in red wine it is best to serve red wine with it. And if the fruit has been poached in white wine then pair it with a sweeter white wine.
  • Pairing wine with desserts like mousse, triffle or pudding is easy. Gewürztraminers, Australian Fortified Muscats or American Fortified Muscats are ideal to pair with them.
  • Pair wine with desserts like custards and this will give you and your guests a hearty satisfaction. Pair the custard with a Spanish cava wine or with Californian Champagne.
  • Chocolates can be a great dessert option. If you are serving dark chocolate to your guests it will be good to serve cognac with it as well. For other chocolates, serve Vintage Port Wine, Muscat sherry or Zinfandel with them.
  • When you want to pair wine with cheesecake, remember Champagne is the best choice. Riesling will also go well with this dessert.

When we want to make our meals perfect, we do take great care to serve the right drink from start to end. A good wine changes the taste of the meal and makes it more appealing. So, we need to take special care to serve the right wine with different courses of the meal. It is not a good idea to choose one kind of wine for the whole meal. Go ahead, pair wine with desserts and have a great meal.
