Shipping goodies requires some thought on what is best to send. Remember to choose things that will travel well. Usually it is better to send stuff that is sturdy and will take well to the shipping process. The idea is that the baked goods should be in good shape and look fresh when they reach.
Some good ideas on the goodies that you could ship:
- Orange and Clove Snowballs: this one retains its soft texture when shipped
- Gingerbread Cookies: these remain soft and chewy even after few days
- Drop Cookies together with Brownies and Fudge are another choice for baked goods for holiday season that you can pack & ship. These goodies are capable of handling the wear and tear of shipping with ease.
- Homemade chocolates, marshmallows are great shipping options
- Candied Nuts, Spiced Walnuts, and Chocolate bark, all ship and store very well
- Rum Balls are especially good for shipping because they improve with age and you don’t need to panic if you ship them.
Packing
Pack the baked goods only after they have cooled down to room temperature. Never pack them hot or they will break in the transition. Pick up good and sturdy packing material such as ziploc bags and airtight containers, so that the goods remain fresh for a longer period of time. It’s a good idea to layer the baked holiday goods with butter paper to keep them separated. You could also buy attractive, inexpensive, reusable airtight containers for packing.
If you are using Ziploc bag or a plastic bag to place the goods make sure that you place this packet in a tin container or any other box so that goodies are protected during shipping.
Once you gift box is ready, place it inside the larger mail box. Fill in the gap between the two boxes with shredded papers, bubble wrap or some other interesting filler.
Shipping
Now that you are done making and packing baked goods, select a good and reliable shipping or courier company. It is best to choose an express or priority shipping method that will get your package there in 2-3 days, so that the goodies reach in good condition.
However, if you are shipping something perishable, choose overnight or one-day shipping services.
You could add a small non-edible thoughtful gift along with the baked goods to make the gift recipient really happy.
