Fruits ripen quickly and even tend to grow mold within a matter of few days. Hence, it is imperative that some basic knowledge of how to keep fruits fresh is imparted to everyone.

Keep Fruits Fresh Longer

The first and foremost thing to do while aiming to keep fruits fresh is to select fresh and unbruised fruits from the local farm markets or pick fresh fruits yourself. Make sure that the fruits are carried with care while on their way home so as to avoid bruises during the journey. Bruised fruits tend to spoil faster.

Keep Fruits Fresh By Refrigeration

Most fruits can be kept fresh in the refrigerator. Fruits that require immediate refrigeration include berries, cherries, cranberries, currants, figs, grapes, litchis, strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries etc. These fruits are usually done with their ripening processes when bought from market.

  1. Wipe fruits clean once brought home from market.

  2. Place them in plastic bags or fruit bags. Make sure that each kind of fruit is stored in separate bags. Do not mix fruits in the same bag while refrigerating.

  3. Plastic bags are ideal for keeping fruits fresh since they maintain optimum humidity levels required for ripening of fruit.

  4. Place the storage bags in the refrigerator.

  1. Adjust temperature of refrigerator to 37 degrees F.

Keep Fruits Fresh At Room Temperature

Not all fruits require refrigeration. Room temperature is optimum for ripening of fruit and there are some fruits which may loose their texture and nutrition on being refrigerated. Fruits such as apricots, avocados, bananas, honeydew, guava, mangoes, kiwi, melons, peaches, papayas, passion fruit, pears, pineapple and plums can be stored in baskets on kitchen counter tops.

  1. Wipe clean fruits.

  2. Separate fruits that are bruised or over ripe.

  3. Keep ripe fruits separated from not so ripe ones since ripe fruits can hasten the ripening process of the other fruits.

  4. Place the fresh fruits in fruit bowls or baskets. Bananas can be hung on the banana hanger.

  5. Place the fruits away from high heat and direct sunlight in a cool dry place.

Fresh Fruits Anywhere

Now, come the fruits that can be put anywhere according to convenience. These fruits would definitely last longer when refrigerated, but if they are left on counter top too they would continue to retain taste and texture. Thus leave your Clementine, grapefruits, apples, oranges, lime, watermelons, tangerines and pomegranates on counter top without any worry. They will be as good as new when used.

Tips to Keep Fruits Fresh

  1. Prevent fruits from turning brown  by brushing them with lemon juice.

  2. Store ripe apples away from other fruits since ripe apples emanate ethylene, the ripening stimulant.

  3. Wash berries just before eating only since washing in advance can damage and bruise them leading to spoilage.

  4. One way to avoid fruits from getting bruised is to blow air into bags carrying fruits and tie them so that the air cushions the fruits and prevents any kind of bruising.

Armed with these instructions on how to keep fruits fresh, make a few changes in the kitchen and enjoy fresh fruits for a longer period of time.
