How To Have a Backyard BBQ w/o a Backyard!
For many, the summer is synonymous with summertime fun and the traditional American backyard barbecue. However, living in the city can put a damper on anyone’s backyard dreams. In a place where high-rise buildings are plentiful and grass-filled backyards are rare; many city dwellers feel like they must leave their home to throw a summertime gathering.
This year, instead of lugging grilling equipment and heavy coolers to your nearby park, why not throw your own summer BBQ bash at home? From fun food to colorful décor, Andrea Correale – NY’s celebrity caterer who satisfied the palates of A-Listers including Mariah Carey, Brooke Shields, Russell Simmons, the Trumps, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Kelly Ripa, Kim Cattrall and more, gives the average city person tips and tricks to having a fabulous summer BBQ/ backyard bash without the backyard.
“When it comes to putting together the ultimate bash, presentation is key!” says Andrea. Regardless of the size of the space you are working with, uniquely presented food and drinks along with the right décor can take any event to the next level.
Spice up the Décor!
- When selecting table linens, barbecue themes are always fun, and the traditional red&white checkered cloths go a long way. For a less common but equally as effective alternative, go with true summertime bright table clothes. “Fuchsia&orange are irresistible – coupled with monochromatic bunches of flowers placed in tight bunches in small vases,” says Andrea.
- For dishware, Andrea suggests using white square disposable plates for a more elegant (yet cost efficient) look. These can be found at any party store and will contrast nicely against any bright colored tablecloth.
Serving Tips
- Serve Sangria in a large bell jar, which can be purchased from any discount store. Insert the Sangria recipe into a colorful picture frame next to the Sangria. Don’t stop there! Make Sangria ice-cubes by placing one, canned mandarin orange slice in each compartment of two ice cubes trays. Fill each with red wine and freeze. Serve with Sangria.

- For a stylish twist on an old favorite, serve hot dogs made with Kobe beef in a mini bite format on skewers. Arrange each mini bite on a bed of artificial grass to create a backyard ambiance.

- Who says you can’t have lobster at your summer-time bash? “When many people think of lobster, they immediately think of pricey lobster tails,” says Andrea. “However, you can still wow your guests by serving lobster rolls.”
To make Amagansett Lobster Rolls, combine chilled lobster salad with chopped celery and parsley. Serve on a toasty hot dog bun.
