How To Get Rid Of The Salty Brine Taste Of Feta Cheese
Feta Cheese is a curdled cheese which is of Greek origin and is generally sprinkled over salads and pastas. It has a distinct salty taste and if you find it too strong there are ways to get rid of the salty brine taste.
How it is made
Though it was first made in Greece, no one really knows much about its origin. Food critics are still confused about when it was invented. It is made from curdled milk of the cow or goat. This is done made into huge slices or feta, and it is then salted and packed in barrels of brine for several months or weeks. This is why it has a distinct taste and some people prefer getting rid of the salty taste of feta. Feta is white in color and has a varying texture. It can be anything between soft and semi hard. The taste also varies. They are either very sharp, tangy or salty. It is sold in a square form, and is mostly used in salads.
Originally produced using sheep's milk, although now most commercial makers of feta use cow's milk. Feta is stored and cultured in a whey brine, thus giving the cheese its distinctive salty taste. If you find the salty brine taste of feta cheese too strong, it is possible to get rid of the salty brine taste.
How to get rid of the salty brine taste
You can start by putting the cubes of feta in a sieve or a strainer, and rinsing it under cold running water. Once this is done, just tip the rinsed feta into a bowl and pour milk on it. The feta has to be completely soaked in milk. This has to be stored away in the refrigerator for a good three to four hour. Once it is done, drain the milk from the feta using the strainer and you will see that you have succeeded in getting rid of the salty taste of feta.
While attempting to get rid of the salty taste of feta, always remember to put the milk soaked feta in the refrigerator. Alternatively you can soak in the feta in milk overnight, and this is a better way to get rid of the salty brine taste of the cheese.
